““You shall also take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the ram. Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. And you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him; and he and his garments shall be hallowed, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.”
Exodus 29:19-21 NKJV
In this part of exodus it’s kinda hard to hear. So bloody. And so tragic for the animals. Yet God had a reason for it. Looking forward to Jesus. And his sacrifice for us. This is a consecration offering for the priest Aaron and his sons.
Yet when we see this particular part I like this part of it. It’s consecrating his body piece by piece to serve Jesus and the people in holiness? How can we truly be holy apart from sin in service to people and ultimately God. By consecrating or setting apart to God these things. It says the following:
“Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar.”
Exodus 29:20 NKJV
Once again bloody and killing an innocent animal. Old Testament is so tragic to me. But how often have we looked at Jesus as it being tragic how he was killed by humans. Who hated him. Who didn’t recognize him as messiah? So sad.
Apart from that though this passage points ultimately to Jesus. But apart from that we also see this displayed for us. The consecrating of the priests. Aaron was to kill the ram. Then consecrate himself and his sons. Taking the blood of the ram and placing it on tip of the right ear, and the tip of his sons. And on the thumb of the right hand, toes on the right foot, and so on as well as sprinkle the altar.
Question why the right hands and feet and ears only? Well think about it. Jesus right hand is strength? We are also commanded in scripture to serve the lord our God with all our hearts, minds and Strength! Maybe this is why? Aaron and his sons were the first Old Testament priests. So to serve in this they had to be holy or consecrated set apart for his service apart from being sinful. This is why.
I also want to talk about the ears, hands and feet. The ears for hearing from the Holy Spirit. Even back then he was around. Yes he was active in the Old Testament. Speaking to his priests and even the people. To anoint their sinful wayward ears for hearing from the lord. Then the right hand. For serving the lord first then the people. Then the right foot. To go where the lord would request for him. How often do we do this for the lord? Lord means we serve him. Do we go where he wants us to go. Do we HEAR his voice or listen for it? And take and do what he requests of us.
